About

Originally trained as a classical marine and estuarine ecologist with a background in aquatic ecology and ichthyology, I have progressively moved into the fields of numerical ecology and ecological modelling. In recent years, my work has focused increasingly on ecosystem protection, restoration, and management, with strong expertise in spatial analysis and dynamic modelling of marine and oceanic processes.

For more than three decades I have been actively engaged in international research, much of it within EU-funded projects — many of which I coordinated. I have contributed to reports for FAO/UNEP, EMB, HELCOM, and ICES, and served as a national delegate to the ICES Science Committee. I also headed the Joint Institute for Environmental Sciences and Biodiversity at EU-CONEXUS European University.

Currently, I lead work packages in two major Horizon Europe projects — MARBEFES and Marine-SABRES — both dedicated to safeguarding, restoring, and managing marine biodiversity, where I design decision-support tools for environmental and biodiversity management.
